Created by Nexus Mods owner Robin Scott in , it grew to host numerous mods for various games over the years. In , Vortex replaced NMM as the latest open-source platform, with the latter no longer receiving updates. NMM is a mod managing platform whereby the Nexus Mod community can share their game modifications in a central place.
Fans can download these files and install them in the relevant game, bringing new features and content not available in the original version. When comparing it to manually modding a game , its key benefits include better installation, organization, and removal. You can create modifications for well-known titles on the platform. The open-source manager is safe to use , even with it not receiving any more updates.
The name changed to Nexus Mods Manager in , but the platform and mechanics remained the same. Vortex finally released in for that purpose, featuring several new functions that NMM was unable to perform.
Since then, modders and fans alike have been moving from the old to the new utility. While Vortex has taken the limelight for the past few years, NMM is still available to download and install on Windows.
You can access mods for the games in its portfolio, letting you make changes to many of your favorite old titles. If you head to the support forum, you might find someone in the community who could assist you with a minor glitch or problem. Since Vortex is the new Nexus Mod Manager, it receives regular updates from the development team and mod creators alike. Vortex fixes this problem by creating an alert with a red lightning bolt by the conflicting modification file.
You can change the load order or set the rules for how it affects your game. Thankfully, long after the official patches stopped rolling out modders remain devoted to making the game more stable and usable. Here are some mods that will improve your overall experience. Created by the same modders as the Unofficial Oblivion patches, the Unofficial Skyrim patches catch a huge amount of bugs the official patches don't.
A lot of them are things you might never notice, like objects that were placed slightly wrong so they clip through each other or quests that break if you do something unusual, but it's still better to have them than not. There's one for the Legendary Edition and one for the official High Resolution textures patch. Not So Fast. This mod helps you modify the order of events to a more reasonable pace. Not only can you get Breezehome when you hand in the Dragonstone, but you can also ignore the Civil War part altogether!
Fully customizable through MCM. Project Optimization. Project Optimization improves Skyrim performance by occlusion culling, which means not rendering effects you can't see. If you use a lot of serious lighting mods, like ENB and Realistic Lighting, then this mod can save you several frames per second. Realistic Humanoid Movement Speed. Sick of walking like a turtle and sprinting like a cheetah? This mod fixes the problem. Your movement speed is adjusted to more reasonable levels, from a brisk walk that lets you keep up with NPCs, to slower run speeds that make it challenging to escape from that cranky troll.
This is a small mod, but it makes the game much less frustrating. Performance Textures. This mod rezises and enhances the textures for armor, clothes, and weapons, making them both better looking while simultaneously making the file sizes smaller for improved performance. This is useful for users with low-end machines who still want to improve their graphics.
The modder has done the same for animals and creatures. Performance Plus. Performance Plus decreases the fidelity of particles, which provides an FPS boost.
In most cases, such as snow, it's barely noticeable, and the slight degrading of particle textures is more than made up for by an increase in performance. The Choice is Yours.
Lets the player be way more in charge of what quests they want. Stops random auto-quest greetings from NPCs, stops books from giving auto-quests, and lets the player customize when they want to see certain quests become available. Full MCM support. Optimal experience paired with Timing Is Everything. Skyrim's map is functional but boring. A Quality World Map offers multiple ways to fix it. You can replace the map with a much more detailed world texture, with colors that help delineate the separate areas much more obviously, but there's also an option to have a paper map with a more Oblivion look if that's your thing.
Skyrim's original UI is, well, terrible. SkyUI makes it easier to use, more pleasant to read, and much more useful for sorting through your loot and menus. Most importantly, SkyUI adds a mod configuration menu to the pause screen, letting you tweak and adjust compatible mods including many on this list. A lot of mods don't require SkyUI and will run just fine without it, but you'll get much more out of your mods if you have it. Using a keyboard and mouse for Skyrim means sometimes the game gets confused when you're selecting a dialogue option.
You've noticed, surely, that sometimes when you choose a response the game thinks you've chosen a different one. Skyrim's dialogue controls are weird and clunky, and this mod completely and thankfully fixes that. An almighty overhaul of Skyrim's perk tree, this adds new perks, bulking out each basic skill to give a ton more options to spend your precious perk points on. From 'Fog of War' in the stealth tree to 'Flee Fool' in the two-handed tree, there's plenty of new abilities to master!
If you want to look good while exploring Tamriel then these craftable Fur Cloaks and Linen Capes are particularly stylish - you can also get them emblazoned with hold insignia by obtaining them from the appropriate locations. The immersion will jump once you install this mod, as it means that dungeons, towns, and the countryside will sound different each time you venture out. The completionist in me loves this mod. The feeling of reading the last glowing book before you add it to your collection is so satisfying.
This mod will change your life. Who knew that Alteration was the best magic school? Ever been walking through one of Skyrim's cities when five citizens are suddenly simultaneously clamouring for your attention?
Of course you have. The people roaming through Windhelm, Riften, and Falkreath just love to chat and this mod lets them do it to their heart's content. Just, to other NPCs - not you.
This means strolling through a village is suddenly much more immersive with its inhabitants having a chat outside the Inn or as a break from harvesting wheat. Small change, but a big difference. If the sight of golden skin of the Thalmor looming over the horizon, or the sound of the self-righteous Stormcloaks as they tramp by deafens you, this mod is what you're looking for. No longer do just the two civil war factions patrol round Skyrim: Immersive Patrols adds scheduled Dawnguard, caravan, and guard patrols to Skyrim and Reaver, Skaal, Redoran, and Riekling patrols to Solstheim, as well as making existing patrols regular.
It also adds moderately-sized civil war fort battles so you can sink your axe, arrow, or destruction magic of choice into even more heads. This mod helps solve that by giving them five times the regular amount of gold to trade with, as well as three times as much merchandise to sell to you. NPCs in Skyrim are surprisingly ballsy. This mod changes that, and makes NPCs run for cover when enemies approach, which saves you the trouble of running around trying to save the brave, valiant idiots.
No more hearing about arrows in knees. NPCs get more dialogue options with this mod, and they even address you with over 50 different voice times. Somebody stole your sweetroll? If you decline, the quest has to litter your journal for eternity.
This combines several of the BIG Better Improvements for Gameplay mods relating to combat in one package, bringing additional kill moves to your adventure and increasing the chance of you pulling them off during fights. There are new spell archetypes, including bombs, growth, and plus you can summon any creature in Skyrim!
With this mod NPCs fighting styles drastically change. Note: the PC link leads to 'Combat Evolved' mod, which does a very similar thing. Gore never looked better. I love seeing my character execute a badass kill-move to take down enemies, and this mod makes fighting a joy.
Wounds Available on: PC. With Wounds, you can actually pick up debilitating injuries that take days, weeks, or even months to heal properly. Smashed femur? Unfortunately, this mod is only on PS4 at the moment. Prepare to Wabbajack enemies into Oblivion and rain explosive cheese from darkened skies! Cross and Jab Available on: PC.
